Citizen Praises Sheriff's Innovative Programs
Dear Sheriff Neustrom:
Just so you know that I do write complimentary letters in addition to those that criticize, please accept my praise for some of your innovative programs that have been recently highlighted in the media. The programs I speak of are the direct supervision of prisoners approach; the off-site telecommunication visitation for families of prisoners; the call program for the elderly; and the day reporting programs for some offenders. All of these programs show your very humanistic approach to corrections and the general human condition. You are a different kind of sheriff from the standard old Louisiana model, and it has taken some adjustment by the jaded downtown crowd (myself included) to see the wisdom of your ways. Anyway, thank you for your innovative programs, and I am always available with an opinion. I don't lack opinions.
With kind regards, I remain Very truly yours, Albert M. Karre', Jr.

Work Release Fundraiser

Friday, February 16, 2007

Hard work but for a good cause was the attitude several Work Release Program residents had when they organized and conducted a fundraiser for the Little Lambs Outreach program. In a joint effort with Brother Russell Roseberry of InnerFaith Prison Ministry, these residents sold a lunch meal consisting of a barbequed hamburger or hot dogs, bag of chips, and a drink for $5.00 each. Work Release participant Robert Green suggested the idea to InnerFaith staff and actually used his own personal funds to purchase the patties, hot dogs, drinks, and condiments. The remaining items needed for the fundraiser (buns and chips) were donated through InnerFaith volunteers. The Work Release Program resident population purchased the majority of the meals and Work Release Program staff purchased the remaining meals. A total of $214 was raised for the Little Lambs.

The goal of the Little Lambs Outreach program is to offer hope to the families and children of inmates housed in Louisiana prisons. The program provides counseling, food, gifts, school supplies and other items and services. The program's purpose is to help meet these families' needs, so their children can regain their self-worth and confidence. Statistics show that inmates' children are six times more likely to be incarcerated and that 70-percent will be in the criminal justice system at some point.
