LPSO Announces Land Purchase

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

On Wednesday, July 30, The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office purchased 29 acres of land for the intended future utilization of The Sheriff's Public Safety Complex. The Sheriff's Office utilized existing general funds to purchase this property for 1.2 million dollars which is located off Willow Street in Lafayette.

As the population within Lafayette Parish continues to grow, the need for an additional complex is evident and has been discussed for years. Preliminary plans for The Sheriff's Public Safety Complex consist of a work release facility, a drug treatment facility, and a laundry facility for the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. The Sheriff's office is evaluating the possibility of constructing a police sub-station and additional secure-housing, among other needs, as it goes through a programming process. The planning and construction of this complex is part of a long-term plan to continue quality service and excellence in law enforcement and safety to the Lafayette Parish community. A start date for the construction has not yet been set.

The sheriff's office will be holding community meetings in the near future to answer questions and provide more information to the community as the plans become more fully developed.
