Citizen Praises Sheriff's Innovative Programs
Dear Sheriff Neustrom:
Just so you know that I do write complimentary letters in addition to those that criticize, please accept my praise for some of your innovative programs that have been recently highlighted in the media. The programs I speak of are the direct supervision of prisoners approach; the off-site telecommunication visitation for families of prisoners; the call program for the elderly; and the day reporting programs for some offenders. All of these programs show your very humanistic approach to corrections and the general human condition. You are a different kind of sheriff from the standard old Louisiana model, and it has taken some adjustment by the jaded downtown crowd (myself included) to see the wisdom of your ways. Anyway, thank you for your innovative programs, and I am always available with an opinion. I don't lack opinions.
With kind regards, I remain Very truly yours, Albert M. Karre', Jr.

Uniform Patrol Division

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office Uniform Patrol Department is assigned the duties of criminal patrol throughout Lafayette Parish, which includes the investigation of numerous traffic accidents each year. The Uniform Patrol Department also responds to calls for assistance from the six municipalities located in Lafayette Parish. The men and women of patrol are furnished with state of the art equipment including on board laptop computers, and Global Positioning. The vehicles are currently being upgraded with onboard stationary and moving radar as well as video recording equipment and camera systems for evidentiary purposes.

The Uniform Patrol Department consists of Patrol Shifts, K-9, Traffic Escorts, Communications, Contract Security, School Crossing Guards, and Field Training Officers.

The Patrol Shifts Section consists of four shifts of patrol personnel. Each shift is comprised of a watch commander who holds the rank of lieutenant, two field supervisors with the rank of sergeant and additional deputies who are assigned by zone. These deputies are responsible for answering calls for service, both emergency and non-emergency, as well as handling Patrol and Radar requests

The Communications Section provides 24-hour dispatch services for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office and for all municipalities in our parish except for the City of Lafayette. Utilizing computer-aided dispatch (C.A.D.), and linked to 911, LPSO Dispatchers are a liaison between the public and law enforcement.

The K-9 Section utilizes highly trained and certified dual-purpose dogs and handlers for patrol use. They are dispatched to most in-progress calls and are utilized in building searches and apprehensions of high-risk suspects and are also certified to provide narcotics detection. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office also utilizes an explosive detection K-9 that provides service in Lafayette Parish and throughout South Louisiana.

The Traffic Escort Section provides funeral escort services for every funeral service in the parish and also oversees the school crossing guard program.

Contract Security provides 24-hour security services to the University Medical Center Hospital and the Lafayette Regional Airport.

Field Training Officer Section is responsible for improving the quality of new patrol recruits by utilizing realistic and job oriented training. This is accomplished through on the job training and classroom instruction. Recruits are trained in statutory criminal law and procedure, “on board" laptop computer usage, radio etiquette, officer safety, building searches, criminal and accident investigations, crime scene preservation, report writing, defensive driving techniques, emergency driving and patrol officer daily functions.
