Sheriff Michael W. Neustrom and the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office honored outstanding Deputies at their quarterly awards ceremony. Deputies representing the Administrative, Enforcement and Corrections Divisions were recognized for outstanding service to the Sheriff's Office and the citizens of Lafayette Parish.
Deputy Casey Barfield & Deputy John Babineaux, Jr. – Both deputies are nominated for their response to a medical emergency call where an 8-year-old boy was home alone with his 74-year-old grandmother who had possibly passed away. Upon arriving at the scene, Deputy Barfield and Deputy Babineaux found the woman with no pulse and not breathing. They administered CPR for approximately 7 to 8 minutes before the ambulance arrived. Paramedics were able to detect a pulse and the woman was airlifted to a local hospital.
Lt. Frank Durand & Deputy Cindy Overfelt – Both Lt. Durand and Deputy Overfelt have been with the Sheriff's Office for over 20 years and are in charge of the cataloging and storage of evidence, making them responsible for more than 90,000 pieces of evidence and property. Through their efforts, they have consistently maintained the efficiency and integrity of the evidence section and serve as an example for other employees.
Deputy Michael McSheffrey – (Deputy McSheffrey received 3 separate nominations from co-workers relating to the following incident):
While working on A-Shift, Deputy McSheffrey conducted a search of a prisoner brought in by an outside agency for booking. During the search, Deputy McSheffrey discovered a semi-automatic weapon in the prisoner's waistband. Through his attention to detail and dedication to doing his job properly, Deputy McSheffrey was able to prevent events that could have lead to the injury or death of both deputies and inmates.
