Child found walking on rural roadway
Monday, July 2, 2012
Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Deputies received a call from a citizen who reported seeing a young child walking in the 300 block of Le’Violon Road just outside of Scott at 5:36 AM on Sunday July 1, 2012. Deputies arrived to find a four-year-old child wandering along the street. The child was unable to communicate her address or relative information.
Deputies began a door-to-door canvass in the immediate area while the child was transported to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office. Office of Child Services was contacted and began their own investigation into the welfare of the child.
At approximately 10:30 AM, Deputies found an open rear door to a home in the 100 block of Logan Street near where the child had been found. Deputies discovered that two adults, identified as the girl’s primary care-givers, were sleeping in that home. According to the couple, the child was asleep on a couch when the two retired for the evening. The child apparently awoke, wandered outside through a locked rear door and made her way to the Le’Violon Street where a passing motorist reported the incident.
The assigned investigators assigned to the case plan to submit a report to the District Attorney’s Office but no immediate arrests were made. The child was taken into state custody by Office of Child Services, who will continue to monitor the child’s welfare.
