Youngsville Middle School
Tuesday, October 9, 2012
Just before 8 AM on Tuesday October 9, 2012 the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Deputy assigned to Youngsville Middle School was alerted by the principal that a parent had concerns that a student had brought a gun onto campus.
The Lafayette Parish School System plan was put into action and the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office in support of that plan secured the student as he arrived on campus via a school bus. The bus was searched no weapon was found. The child was searched and later interviewed in the presence of his parents. The education process was not disrupted by this incident and initial reports by deputies that the school was on lock down were incorrect. The initial deputies on scene along with the administrators of Youngsville Middle School never perceived a credible threat to any students or the staff therefore having secured and searched the student and the bus the school was never “locked down”. Deputies did monitor all coming and goings at the school while other deputies conducted their investigation.
Deputies were told that a parent reported that her 14 year old son a student at Youngsville Middle School had come into possession of a gun and that it was possible he may have brought that gun with him to school. After a thorough investigation deputies have learned that this student had stolen a gun along with other juveniles and that the gun was hidden near his home south of Youngsville. Deputies are continuing their investigation into the theft and have recovered a gun in the area where the student claimed to have hidden the stolen merchandise.
The Lafayette Parish School System had administrative staff on sight along with the response of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.
