Deputy involved in Shooting

Wednesday, February 9, 2005

On Tuesday February 8, 2005 at approximately 5:25 p.m. Lafayette Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a 911 call in reference to a domestic disturbance at 408 Confederate Avenue. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the complainant who stated that her and her husband 31-year-old William L. Andrus Jr. were arguing. Mr. Andrus fled the scene before deputies arrived.

During the course of the investigation, a deputy was in the residence taking a report from the complainant when Mr. Andrus broke into the house through a rear door. Armed with a 3-foot machete knife, Mr. Andrus approached the deputy in a threatening manner. In order to protect himself and the complainant, the deputy was forced to discharge his firearm to stop the aggression. Mr. Andrus received two gunshot wounds and died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Sheriff's Office officials are conducting a review of the incident and have asked the Louisiana State Police to conduct an independent investigation.
