Deputy forced to use Taser

Thursday, October 7, 2010

On Monday September 4, 2010 at approximately 9:30pm a Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputy received reliable information that an individual walking in the 600 Block of Marigny Circle may be involved in a drug transaction. Upon spotting someone fitting that description the deputy initiated an investigative stop. During the stop the subject became uncooperative and the deputy had to call for additional units. Before the backup units arrived the deputy was forced to use his Electronic Control Device to control the situation. As the deputy rendered aid after the deployment he noticed that the individual was unresponsive, so he called for an ambulance and began medical treatment. The man was then transported to a nearby Hospital were he died. The individual was identified as 28 year old Javon Rakestrau of Lafayette. Illegal narcotics were found to be in Rakestraus’ possession at the time of the stop.
In accordance with standard LPSO polices and procedures the incident is being reviewed.
