Sheriff Honors 1st Career Academy Graduates

Sheriff Michael W. Neustrom, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, and the Lafayette Parish School Board honored graduates of the first Sheriff’s Career Academy at a ceremony on Tuesday, May 07, 2002. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office is proud to partner with the Lafayette Parish School Board to conduct the first Law Enforcement Career Academy in the State of Louisiana. Kourtney Stroud of Acadiana High, Kristopher Andrus and Kyle Landor of Carencro High, Russell Bertrand, Justin Dean, and Shane Hebert of Comeaux High, Charell Jackson and Dale Thomas of Lafayette High, and Kathleen Delhom of Northside High School were honored for completing the required coursework and will receive one high school credit. Students attended class on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Sheriff’s Community Training Center and received instruction from various law enforcement on subjects that included: History of Law Enforcement; Legal Terms and Concepts; Criminal Code; Police Ethics; First Aid and CPR, Media and the Police; Crime Prevention; Victim Rights; Elderly Crime Victims; Use of Force; Patrol Methods; Interview and Interrogation; Police Survival; Firearms; Crime Scene Investigation; Rules of Evidence; Dynamics of Domestic Violence, Police Report Writing; and Courtroom Testimony. Coursework also required students to ride-along with Patrol Deputies and observe the Sheriff’s Office Communications Center along with tours of the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, AFIS and Angola State Penitentiary.
