Sheriff DevelopsTipsy Taxi Program

Tuesday, April 3, 2007

Sheriff Michael W. Neustrom would like to announce the forming of a new crime prevention program called “Tipsy Taxi."
Tipsy Taxi is designed to promote partnerships between local law enforcement agencies, vendors, bartenders, restaurant employees, and community members in providing free and confidential cab rides home for intoxicated patrons. Tipsy Taxi does not take a moral stance on drinking. The primary goal of Tipsy Taxi is to remove intoxicated drivers from the streets of Lafayette Parish. It has been modeled after a program started in Aspen Colorado, in 1983.

After receiving specialized training on the Tipsy Taxi program, local law enforcement agencies, bartenders, and restaurant employees provide assistance by distributing vouchers for the program to patrons they feel are too intoxicated to drive themselves. These vouchers guarantee patrons a free ride home with a taxi service to any residence within Lafayette Parish.

The program is designed to be as simple as possible to encourage use by impaired drivers. Rides are free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day/365 days a year. Tipsy Taxi is not funded by tax dollars – funding is provided through a portion of fines collected for traffic offenses and private donations.

The Tipsy Taxi program compliments the education efforts aimed at middle school students, known as the Crash Course, and enforcement activities such as sobriety check points and increased officer awareness and enforcement of impaired driving statutes.

These agencies and companies have come together with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, to develop the Tipsy Taxi program:
