Censes workers in Lafayette Parish

Monday, March 15, 2010

Sheriff Mike Neustrom wants residents of Lafayette Parish to remember that U.S. Censes workers will soon be working throughout the parish. A census taker is a person from the local community hired by the Census Bureau to make sure the area is represented accurately as possible. There are ways to insure that the person who knocks on your door is legitimate.

First, ask to see an ID and a badge that shows that the person represents the U.S. Census Bureau. The worker will also have a hand-held device that is used to take your information; the census taker will also carry an over-the-shoulder bag with U.S. Census Bureau 2010 printed in large letters on the side, and a confidentiality notice.
Census workers will not ask for your Social Security number or for information about your bank accounts or credit cards. Never invite the worker, or anyone you don’t know, into your home. To protect against identity theft, you never give out personal or financial information to anyone who shows up at your door. When in doubt call your local law Enforcement Agency.
