Public Invited to Presentation: Mental Illness and Our Local Criminal Justi

Tuesday, February 24, 2015

The public is welcomed to attend a presentation entitled The New Asylum: Behavioral Health and the Criminal Justice System. The two hour presentation and discussion will take place at the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office Public Safety Complex located at 1825 W. Willow on Wednesday March 18th   at 1:00 p.m.

Marie Collins, Treatment Programs Manager, and Rob Reardon, Corrections Director for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, will discuss the stats and the facts around this growing problem, as well as the cost effective approach the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office is using to address it. This program is presented in partnership with the local chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).

Today 3 in 10 people incarcerated have a mental health issue. The number may be even more, since mental health issues are often times disguised by substance abuse. Up to 8 of 10 people have or have had a substance abuse issue. Often for many of these offenders jail is the only place treatment and medication is available. This, along with very high rates of recidivism, makes this population the most expensive to keep incarcerated and the leading factor in rising jail costs, both here and across the nation.

Please join us for this interesting and timely discussion. Area mental health care and substance abuse treatment providers are welcomed to attend and join in on the discussion.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), American Correctional Association (ACA) and NCCHC (National Commission on Correctional Health Care) for the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
