Public is Invited to Juveniles and Our Local Criminal Justice System Presen

Tuesday, September 22, 2015

The public is invited to attend a presentation entitled “Juvenile Justice in Acadiana.”  The presentation is part of a continuing series of events discussing the complex issues facing our community and our criminal justice system.  The presentation and discussion will take place at the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Complex located at 1825 W. Willow on Thursday, October 8th, at 9:00 a.m.
Presenters will include Dr. Holly Howat, Executive Director of the Lafayette Criminal Justice Committee, Rob Reardon, Director of Corrections for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office and others. Together they will be discussing issues, sharing information, and answering questions about how the Sheriff’s Office new Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC) helps area law enforcement agencies, the courts and youth service providers address the issues of juvenile delinquency and criminality in our community.
The presentation will present information on juvenile arrests and referrals to the JAC as well as programs and other strategies to address juvenile delinquency. Prior to the establishment of the JAC, comprehensive information on arrested and at risk juvenile in the parish  was unavailable. The primary goal of the JAC is to evaluate juvenile offenders and provide the courts with the information to adjudicate and hopefully provide a plan of action to address juvenile behavior. The JAC also helps monitor the juvenile’s compliance with any agreed to plan of action assigned by the court or agreed to by the juvenile and parent. In doing so, the JAC is able to compile statistical information on juvenile offenders including demographics, types of offenses, and effectiveness of program referrals. Dealing with these issues early on will keep many of these kids in school and out of the jail and the criminal justice system later in life.
All interested are invited to attend, including the general public, concerned parents, educators, local youth service providers and the media..
