Transitional Work Program New Name for Work Release

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

As of January 1, 2012 the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Work Release Program will change its name to Transitional Work Program. The new name is in keeping with the true nature of the program, which is to provide transitional services and living accommodations to offenders who have already or will soon be rejoining the local private work force. This name change is also in keeping with recent changes in Department of Corrections’ terminology, which, as of 2010, made the same change.
Locally, the timing of the program’s name change is also due to the anticipation of the program moving to its future location at the new LPSO Public Safety Complex on Willow Street.  Construction on the new Public Safety Complex will begin later this year and is scheduled to be completed in early 2013.
The Transitional Work Program is currently housed in the “Transitional Housing Facility” located across from the Correctional Center on West Vermilion Street in Downtown Lafayette.
The current center houses three different programs focused on transitioning qualified offenders back into the community: Rehab, Reentry, and the Transitional Work Program. At times, the facility also provides housing for GPS-Tracking and Day Reporting offenders who do not have suitable housing.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office is committed to providing innovative, proven and cost-effective diversion, rehabilitation and training programs to qualified offenders, while lowering recidivism and keeping security in the forefront.
For more information on this or on other LPSO programs and services, call Julio Naudin, Project Development Manager; Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Community Corrections Department at 337-280-4629.
