Deputies capture fleeing suspect

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

Shortly after 5 pm on Tuesday January 15, 2013 deputies assigned to the Sheriff’s Office STAR Team conducted a traffic stop in 900 block of Ridge Road.  The stop yielded the recovery of over 20 grams of marijuana wrapped in 15 separate packages on an occupant of the vehicle.  The occupant provided misinformation of his identity to the deputies.  Deputies would determine his true identity as Donte Harris 17 years old from Patterson,LA.  He was transported to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office where the deputy prepared his necessary booking paperwork, during this process Harris ran out of the building through a rear office door while still handcuffed.  A search was initiated by deputies along with members of the Lafayette City Police and within minutes Harris was taken back into custody traveling through a cement coulee on St Mary Street a few blocks from the Sheriff’s Office Administration Building.  Harris was transported to the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center where he remains pending bond hearings for the possession with intent to distribute marijuana, resisting an officer, and simple escape charges along with the two outstanding warrants from St Mary Parish.

At the time of the stop deputies also arrested a second passenger in the vehicle for possession of one gram of marijuana and obstruction of justice this subject was identified as London West 22 years old of Duson.  Mr. West is accused of attempting to swallow a bag which contained approximately one gram of marijuana as deputies asked him to step from the vehicle.  Deputies were able to prevent West from swallowing the drugs and were able to recover a sufficient amount of marijuana to charge him.
