Basic Employment Information
It is the policy of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office to seek the best-qualified individuals for full and part-time positions. The selection process is thorough and regimented- equal opportunity is provided to everyone regardless of race, color, gender, national origin, age or disability.
To be considered for employment, applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and must possess a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, honorable discharge (if prior military), and no record of felony convictions. The hiring process includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Taking the Test of Adult Basic Education or passing the Entry-level Correctional Officer Exam
- Satisfactory completion of the employment application
- Successful background investigation and oral interview
Upon acceptance of a conditional job offer, new employees must also successfully complete a medical and psychological examination and drug screening. The process may also involve a physical agility test involving the essential functions of the job for which the applicant is applying. Applicants may further be required to undergo a polygraph examination regarding background and character. Subject areas from which questions are drawn include financial status, physical condition, work record, honesty, use of alcohol, driving record, arrests and convictions, drugs, narcotics, gambling, blackmail, friends, relatives, associates, and loyalty to the United States.
“Please understand that it may take 28-42 days after Testing before a final decision is made regarding your employment. Applicants will be given careful, fair, and equal consideration. If you are turned down for any reason, you may re-apply after one year. There are several reason why you could be removed from the application process, should you be removed, the LPSO is under no obligation to reveal the reason for disqualification.”
